Sugar Mountain Usually Opens First. Its Summit House Rebuild Has No Finish Date.

  • October 29, 2026

When does ski season actually start in the High Country? Appalachian Ski Mtn. has posted a date and Beech Mountain Resort has posted one too. The mountain that has usually started first has not posted a date at all, and as of late September its summit was a construction site.

Sugar Mountain Resort's season history shows openings between November 9 and November 28 over the last seven seasons. Five of those seven came before November 20, which is the date Appalachian is targeting this year. If this season follows that pattern, the first lift rides of the winter will be at Sugar, before the other two resorts reach their posted dates. As of Sugar's September 22 update, the original 1969 Summit House at the top of those runs had been torn down and its replacement was still being built, with no finish date given.

Sugar's own record sets the early window

Sugar doesn't post a fixed opening day. Its mountain information page says the resort aims to open "by early to mid November," depending on weather. The clearer guide is the season history Sugar publishes, which lists every recent opening date next to that winter's snowfall.

Season Sugar opening day Total snowfall
2025–26 November 11, 2025 69.5"
2024–25 November 22, 2024 77.5"
2023–24 November 28, 2023 51.7"
2022–23 November 14, 2022 36"
2021–22 November 15, 2021 56.7"
2020–21 November 19, 2020 80"
2019–20 November 9, 2019 64.2"

The snowfall column shows that the opening date doesn't follow how much snow the winter brings. The 2022–23 season had only 36 inches of total snowfall and still opened on November 14. The 2020–21 season ended with 80 inches and opened later, on November 19. An early opening depends on snowmaking and on enough cold nights in the first half of November to run it. That's why Sugar's snowmaking upgrades this year, covered below, matter more to the start of the season than any snowfall forecast.

Over the seven seasons, the two late openings were November 22 and November 28. The other five fell between November 9 and November 19. As this post goes up in early November, Sugar's earliest recent opening date is only a few days away. For a firm date this season, Sugar points skiers to its opening-day line at 828-898-4521 and its webcams.

The posted dates come after that

The other resorts have set their targets on the calendar, and every one of them depends on the weather.

  1. Appalachian Ski Mtn., Friday, November 20. The resort lists its 2026–27 scheduled season as November 20 through March 14, with opening day marked "weather permitting." Online reservations are required, so lift tickets and rentals get booked before you drive up the hill.
  2. Beech Mountain Resort, Saturday, November 21. Beech's winter hours page lists this as its projected opening date.
  3. Hawksnest Snow Tubing, Thanksgiving weekend. The Seven Devils tubing park has 2026/27 tickets on sale and is tentatively aiming for Thanksgiving weekend, depending on weather and snowmaking.
  4. Sugar's ice skating, date to be announced. Sugar's skating page hasn't set a 2026–27 opening date. The rink usually runs from late November through early March, weather permitting.

App and Beech have set their dates one day apart. On Sugar's past record, both targets fall after most of Sugar's recent openings. If November turns cold early, Sugar will probably run alone for a week or more before the others open. If it stays warm, all three could open in the same weekend or two, as they would have in 2023, when Sugar didn't open until November 28.

What's missing at the top of Sugar

Sugar's September 22, 2026 announcement said the original Summit House, built in 1969, "has been demolished and is currently undergoing a complete rebuild." Its replacement is a 5,400-square-foot glass building with two floors. The lower level will be a ready area for ski and snowboard patrol. The second floor will be a year-round restaurant the resort calls "mid-to-upper-tier," looking out over the High Country from the 5,300-foot summit.

That announcement gives no completion date. It doesn't say whether the building will be open this winter. Until Sugar announces that it's open, anyone planning a lunch break at the peak in the first weeks of the season shouldn't count on it.

The words "year-round" matter for people who live nearby. The old Summit House served skiers. The new building is planned as a restaurant that keeps serving after the snow melts, so it would give the High Country a summit dining room open in every season. That change will outlast this ski season, whenever the doors open.

What's finished at Sugar this season

Most of Sugar's other improvements this year are complete or partly in service, and several of them affect how early the resort can open.

  • Snowmaking pipe. Eighteen hundred feet of decades-old snowmaking pipe on Laurel Lane has been replaced.
  • Three new automated snow guns. Sugar installed three fully automated SMI Super Pole Cat machines: one about three-quarters of the way down Flying Mile, one at the bottom of Little Nell, and one at the top of Fanny Hill, a popular meeting point on Easy Street.
  • Grooming. A new Pisten Bully 600 Winch Cat has joined the grooming fleet.
  • Night lights. The project to switch all of the slope night lights to LED was halfway done as of the September announcement.
  • Murals at the garage. Muralist Ashley Roberts finished a three-phase project on the Summit Express parking garage. The front wall now carries a larger-than-life map of Sugar's lifts and trails across its 125 skiable acres. The loading-side wall shows American ski racer Spider Sabich racing down Tom Terrific during a pro race in the 1970s.

The snowmaking work connects back to the season history. Automated guns can start making snow as soon as conditions allow, and Sugar's early openings in dry winters like 2022–23 came from snowmaking, not snowfall. The murals are the first new thing most people will see this season, since they're on the garage you park in before you reach any lift.

Once Beech opens, the cheapest local nights are there

After Beech opens on its projected November 21 date, the local pricing in the High Country is mostly at Beech. Its specials page lists a Monday Locals Night at $26 per person for residents of Avery, Ashe, Watauga, Mitchell, Carter, Washington and Johnson counties. You'll need proof of residency, and it's limited to one ticket per person.

Beech special Who qualifies Price
Monday Locals Night Residents of the seven listed counties, proof required $26
Tuesday Student Night Students with a valid student ID $26
School Daze snow days Students and teachers from closed K-12 schools in the same seven counties $22 ticket, $15 rentals
College discount College students with a valid ID, Monday through Friday, non-holiday $5 off regular tickets

Two dates are worth putting on the calendar now. Beech's season specials don't apply during the holiday period from December 21, 2026 through January 1, 2027, except for its military discount. The School Daze snow-day offer also excludes the Christmas holiday period, Martin Luther King Day and Presidents Day.

Appalachian Ski Mtn. has its own snow-day deal. Its special offers page advertises a $15 regional ticket for students, teachers and school staff when their school system in North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina or Virginia closes for winter weather, and it says colleges are included. Check that offer's terms with the resort before the first snow day, since the page carries an older timestamp. Sugar's pass page doesn't list a county-resident or locals-only discount.

Put together, the season has two phases. In the first window, which on past patterns may arrive within days, Sugar is probably the only mountain running. It will have new snowmaking on Flying Mile, Little Nell and Fanny Hill, and its Summit House replacement had no announced opening date as of September. From November 20 and 21 on, App and Beech are scheduled to join. That's also when Beech's $26 Monday Locals Night becomes available to anyone who can show residency in the seven listed counties.
